Taxi

Prices:

To Colombo city center: Approximately €10 (LKR 3,100) during the day and night.

- Language: Most drivers speak little English. It’s helpful to have the address written down or use apps like Google Maps to show your destination.

- Avoid waiting: For more convenience, you can pre-book a taxi with services like Welcome Pickups, which offer English-speaking drivers and fixed rates.

Ride-Sharing (Uber and PickMe)

Location: Apps like Uber and PickMe are available at the airport. You can request a ride directly from your phone.

Prices:

  • Uber is generally cheaper than traditional taxis, with fares starting from LKR 1,200 (€3.50). However, note that tolls (Rs.300) are not included in the price.
Efficiency: Ideal for those seeking quick and affordable transportation.

Peak hours: During heavy traffic times, dynamic pricing can significantly increase fares.

Bus

Location: The express bus from the airport departs from Katunayake Bus Station, located about 500 meters from the terminals. There is a free shuttle service between the terminals and this station.

Prices:

  • To Colombo city center: Rs.130 (€1.50) per trip.

Schedules: From 5:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with departures approximately every half hour.

- Limited luggage space: Buses are often crowded and have limited space for large luggage.

- Recommended route: Bus number 187 connects directly to Pettah Central Station in Colombo.

Train

Location: The nearest station is Katunayaka South Station, about 1 km from the airport. You can reach it by walking or taking a tuk-tuk/taxi from the airport exit.

Prices: A ticket costs around Rs.30 (€0.10).

Schedules: Trains are frequent (approximately one per hour) but may experience delays.

Travel Time: To Colombo city center (Fort Station), the journey takes about an hour.

Tips:

  • First-time visitors: If it’s your first time in Sri Lanka, avoid this option due to its logistical complexity.
  • Budget-friendly alternative: Ideal for budget-conscious travelers who are not in a hurry.

Tuk-Tuks

Although tuk-tuks are not allowed inside the airport, they are available outside the premises (about 100 meters from the exit). They are an affordable and fun option for short distances.
